I read this twice it was so good. I had just read an essay about hyphenated ethnicities in the US - African-American, Chinese-American, Japanese-American...and you know the rest. And at one point in history, when they were the underdogs, it was the Irish-American or Polish-American. Funny how only those have gone the way of landlines. If this is supposed to be a 'melting pot' (ha), we don't need hyphenated identities - except that this country loves to label the 'others.' My parents were 'the deaf people' who lived around the corner. It couldn't just be Joan and Stewart or the Gardners. I'm sorry that you still have to deal with this. If it helps, my father used to just laugh - it was me that would get loud. Not that I regret that. I always felt that was one of the reasons I was here - to protect them. Keep up the awesome work.
